Recoil Velocity Calculator:
Enter the values of recoil force, Rf(lbf), mass of the gun, M(lbs) and recoil distance, RD(in) to determine the value of recoil Velocity, Vr(ft/s).
Recoil Velocity Formula:
Recoil velocity is the velocity at which a gun moves backward after it is fired. This velocity is determined based on the recoil force (RF), the mass of the gun (M), and the recoil distance (RD).
Recoil Velocity, Vr(ft/s) in feet per second is calculated as the square root of the division of the recoil force, Rf(lbf) in pounds-force by the product of the mass of the gun, M(lbs) in pounds and the recoil distance, RD(in) in inches converted to feet (in/12), all divided by the acceleration due to gravity in feet per second squared (32.174049).
Recoil Velocity, Vr(ft/s) = √( Rf(lbf) / M(lbs) * RD(in) / 12 / 32.174049 )
Vr(ft/s) = recoil velocity in feet per seconds, ft/s.
Rf(lbf) = recoil force in pounds-force, lbf.
M(lbs) = mass in pounds, lbs.
RD(in) = recoil distance in inches, in.
Recoil Velocity Calculation:
1.Calculate the recoil velocity of a 6-pound rifle that experiences a recoil force of 18 pounds-force and recoils over a distance of 24 inches.
Given: Rf(lbf) = 18lbf, M(lbs) = 6lbs, RD(in) =24in.
Recoil Velocity, Vr(ft/s) = √( Rf(lbf) / M(lbs) * RD(in) / 12 / 32.174049 )
Vr(ft/s) = √( 18 / 6 * 24 / 12 / 32.174049)
Vr(ft/s) = √( 18 / 6 * 0.0621)
Vr(ft/s) = √( 18 /0.3729)
Vr(ft/s) = √48.32
Vr(ft/s) = 6.94ft/s.
2.A rifle generates a recoil force of 20 pounds-force, recoils over a distance of 18 inches, and has a recoil velocity of 5 feet per second. Calculate the mass of the rifle.
Given: Rf(lbf) = 20lbf, Vr(ft/s) = 5ft/s, RD(in) =18in.
Recoil Velocity, Vr(ft/s) = √( Rf(lbf) / M(lbs) * RD(in) / 12 / 32.174049 )
M(lbs) = ( Rf(lbf) / V2r(ft/s) ) * (RD(in) / 12 / 32.174049 )
M(lbs) = ( 20 / 52 ) * ( 18 / 12 / 32.174049)
M(lbs) = ( 20 / 25 ) * ( 1.5 / 32.174049)
M(lbs) = 0.8 * 0.0466
M(lbs) = 0.3728lbs.
