Impact Velocity Calculator:
Enter the values of acceleration due to gravity, g(m/s2) and height, h(m) to determine the value of Impact velocity, v(m/s).
Impact Velocity Formula:
Impact velocity is the speed at which an object hits another object after being dropped from a certain height, assuming it falls only under the influence of gravity and without air resistance.
Impact velocity, v(m/s) in metres per second is calculated by the square root of the product of two times of acceleration due to gravity, g(m/s2) in metres per second squared and height, h(m) in metres.
Impact velocity, v(m/s) = √ ( 2 * g(m/s2) * h(m) )
v(m/s) = impact velocity in metres per second, m/s.
g(m/s2) = acceleration due to gravity in metres per second squared, m/s2 (9.81m/s2 on earth)
h(m) = height in metres, m.
Impact Velocity Calculation:
1.Calculate the impact velocity of a rock dropped from a 45-metre-high cliff.
Given: g(m/s2) = 9.81m/s2, h(m) = 45m.
Impact velocity, v(m/s) = √( 2 * g(m/s2) * h(m) )
v(m/s) = √( 2 * 9.81 * 45)
v(m/s) = √882.9
v(m/s) = 29.71m/s.
2.Suppose an object impacts the ground with a velocity of 20 m/s, and the acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s2. Find the height from which the object was dropped.
Given: g(m/s2) = 9.81m/s2, v(m/s) = 20m/s.
Impact velocity, v(m/s) = √( 2 * g(m/s2) * h(m) )
h(m) = v2(m/s) / 2 * g(m/s2)
h(m) = 202 / 2 * 9.81
h(m) = 400 / 19.62
h(m) = 20.39m.
