Heat Shrink Size Formula:

Heat shrink tubing is a material used to insulate wires, offering protection against abrasion, chemicals, and environmental damage. It is made of polymer material that shrinks when heated, creating a tight seal around wires or other components.

The initial size, or Outer Size (OS), of the tubing is designed to be larger than the wire or component it covers, allowing for easy application. Upon heating, the tubing contracts to a predetermined size, known as the Nominal Size (NS) or shrunk size, ensuring a snug fit around the object.

The Heat Shrink Ratio (HSR) determines the shrinkage factor, representing the reduction in the tubing’s size from the original to the final, shrunk diameter. For example, a heat shrink ratio of 2:1 means the tubing will reduce to half its original diameter when heated.

The calculation involves dividing the initial size, OS, by the shrink ratio, HSR, to find the nominal size, NS. This ensures that the tubing’s size is compatible with the diameter of the object it will cover after shrinking.

The Nominal Size, NS(cm) in centimetres is equal to the Outer Size, OS(cm) in centimetres divided by the Heat Shrink Ratio, HSR.

Nominal Size, NS(cm) = OS(cm) / HSR

NS(cm) = nominal size in centimetres, cm.

OS(cm) = outer size in centimetres, cm.

HSR = heat shrink ratio.

Heat Shrink Size Calculation:

1.Calculate the Nominal Size of heat shrink tubing with an Outer Size of 4 cm and a Heat Shrink Ratio of 2:1.

Given: OS(cm) = 4cm, HSR = 2.

Nominal Size, NS(cm) = OS(cm) / HSR

NS(cm) = 4 / 2

NS(cm) = 2cm.

2.Given a heat shrink tubing with an Outer Size of 8 cm that shrinks down to a Nominal Size of 2 cm, find the Heat Shrink Ratio.

Given: OS(cm) = 8cm, NS(cm) = 2cm.

Nominal Size, NS(cm) = OS(cm) / HSR

HSR = OS(cm) / NS(cm)

HSR = 8 / 2

HSR = 4:1.
