Pipe Flow Velocity Formula:

Pipe flow velocity is a measure of the speed at which a fluid moves through a pipe, which can be calculated based on the hydraulic characteristics of the pipe and the fluid.

Velocity, v(m/s) in metres per seconds equals the constant, k times the Chezy coefficient, C(m1/2/s) times the hydraulic radius, R(m) in metres raised to the power of 0.63, times the slope S raised to the power of 0.54.

Velocity, v(m/s) =  k * C(m1/2/s) * R0.63(m) * S0.54

v(m/s) =  velocity in metres per seconds, m/s.

k = unit conversion factor.

C(m1/2/s) = Chezy coefficient.

R(m) = radius in metres, m.

S = slope of energy grade line.

Pipe Flow Velocity Calculation:

1.To determine the flow velocity in a pipe with a Chezy coefficient (C) of 60m1/2/s, a hydraulic radius of 0.3 metres, and a slope (S) of 0.001, using a constant (k) of 1 for unit consistency.

Given: k = 1, C(m1/2/s) = 60m1/2/s, R(m) = 0.3m, S = 0.001.

Velocity, v(m/s) =  k * C(m1/2/s) * R0.63(m) * S0.54

v(m/s) = 1 * 60 * 0.30.63 *0.0010.54

v(m/s) = 60 * 0.4683* 0.0239

v(m/s) = 0.674120m/s.

2.The flow velocity in the pipe is 2.5 metres per second, with a constant (k) of 1, a hydraulic radius of 0.3 metres, and a slope of 0.001.Top of Form

Given: k = 1, v(m/s) = 2.5m/s, R(m) = 0.3m, S = 0.001.

Velocity, v(m/s) =  k * C(m1/2/s) * R0.63(m) * S0.54

C(m1/2/s) = v(m/s) / k * R0.63(m) * S0.54

C(m1/2/s) = 2.5 / 1 * 0.30.63 * 0.0010.54

C(m1/2/s) = 2.5 / 0.416 * 0.0224

C(m1/2/s) = 268.1m1/2/s.
