Extrusion Force Formula:

Extrusion force is the force required to push a material through a die to reshape it, based on the material’s properties and the change in cross-sectional area.

Extrusion force, EF(lbf) in pounds-force is equated by the product of original cross-sectional area, Ao(in2) in square inches, final cross-sectional area, Af(in2) in square inches, extrusion constant, k(lbf/in2) in pounds-force per square inch and log of ratio of Ao(in2) and Af(in2).

Extrusion force, EF(lbf) = Ao(in2) * k(lbf/in2) * ln(Ao(in2) / Af(in2))

EF(lbf) = extrusion force in pounds-force, lbf.

Ao(in2) = original cross-sectional area in square inches, in2.

k(lbf/in2) = extrusion constant in pounds-force per square inch, lbf/in2.

Af(in2) = final cross-sectional area in square inches, in2.

Extrusion Force Calculation:

1.Calculate the extrusion force required to extrude aluminum with an extrusion constant of 25,000 lbf/in2.The original cross-sectional area is 2.5in2and it is extruded to a final cross-sectional area of 1in2.

Given: Ao(in2) = 2.5in2, Af(in2) = 1in2, k(lbf/in2) = 25000 lbf/in2.

Extrusion force, EF(lbf) = Ao(in2) * k(lbf/in2) * ln(Ao(in2) / Af(in2))

EF(lbf) = 2.5 * 25000 * ln(2.5 / 1)

EF(lbf) = 62500 * ln(2.5)

EF(lbf) = 62500 * 0.916

EF(lbf) = 57268.17lbf.

k(lbf/in2) = EF(lbf) / Ao(in2) * ln(Ao(in2) / Af(in2))

k(lbf/in2) = 10000 / 2 * ln(2/1)

k(lbf/in2) = 10000 / 2 * 0.693

k(lbf/in2) = 7215.04 lbf/in2.
