Super Heat Formula:

Superheat refers to the condition of a vapour when it is heated beyond its boiling point at a given pressure. In the context of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems, superheat is the temperature difference between the actual temperature of a refrigerant vapor and its saturation temperature at a particular pressure. It is a critical parameter used to ensure efficient system operation and to prevent compressor damage caused by liquid refrigerant.

Superheat is measured in degrees (Celsius or Fahrenheit) and ensures that only vapour enters the compressor, protecting it from damage due to liquid refrigerant. It provides a safety margin, indicating that the refrigerant has absorbed enough heat to completely change into a vapour.

Understanding and controlling superheat is essential for system diagnostics and optimization, as it reflects the efficiency of heat transfer in the evaporator coil. A low superheat may indicate insufficient heat transfer or potential flooding, while a high superheat suggests insufficient refrigerant flow or over-expansion.

Superheat, SH(°C) in degree Celsius equals the difference between the compressor inlet temperature, CT(°C) in degree Celsius and the saturation temperature, ST(°C) in degree Celsius.

Superheat, SH(°C) = CT(°C) – ST(°C)

SH(°C) = super heat in degree Celsius, °C.

CT(°C) = compressor inlet temperature in degree Celsius, °C.

ST(°C) = saturation temperature in degree Celsius, °C.

Super Heat Calculation:

1.A refrigeration system has a compressor inlet temperature of 15°C and a saturation temperature of 10°C. Calculate the superheat.

Given: CT(°C) = 15°C, ST(°C) =10°C.

Superheat, SH(°C) = CT(°C) – ST(°C)

SH(°C) = 15 – 10

SH(°C) = 5°C.

2.A system has a superheat of 7°C and a saturation temperature of 32°C. Calculate the compressor inlet temperature.

Given: SH(°C) = 7°C, ST(°C) = 32°C.

Superheat, SH(°C) = CT(°C) – ST(°C)

CT(°C) = SH(°C) + ST(°C)

CT(°C) = 7 + 32

CT(°C) = 39°C.
